NIS Suspends Officer Charged With Drug Trafficking
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended one of its officers, Akomolafe Gbenga, who was arraigned before a Federal High Court in Lagos on multiple drug trafficking charges.
According to a press statement issued on Wednesday by NIS spokesman Kenneth Udo, the erring officer has been suspended while the Service awaits the court’s decision on the next steps.
The statement read: “The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has been alerted to a publication by sections of the media linking Akomolafe Gbenga Michael, one of its officers serving at Murtala Muhammad International Airport, to multiple charges of alleged drug trafficking, which resulted in his arraignment before a Federal High Court in Lagos.”
“The Service wishes to inform the public that the officer in question has been subjected to internal processes and suspended following the allegation of his involvement in the case in May 2024.
“The Service, therefore, fully supports the court proceedings aimed at determining the level of his guilt.
“To avoid subjudice, the Nigeria Immigration Service will await the court’s decision before making any further comments. The Service reaffirms its commitment to excellent service delivery, discipline, and zero tolerance for criminality, and will not hesitate to sanction any officer whose actions contradict these ideals.”
