The statement on Wednesday, signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Abdurrahman Bundi, read: “The Borno State Governor’s media unit has been drawn to rumours circulating that the Borno State Governor’s son has been arrested for the alleged murder of an Indian citizen.”

“This misinformation was published in the online blog Nairaland under the title “Son of Borno State Governor Murders Someone In India—Politics.” According to the blog, the Governor also travelled to India in an attempt to resolve the situation through diplomatic means.

“It is on record that Governor Babagana Zulum spent a month in Saudi Arabia for the 2024 Hajj before travelling to Cairo to attend the annual ASUWAN forum conference.

“The Media Unit wishes to clarify and set the record straight that Nairaland and other online blogs have maliciously spread defamatory content with no semblance of truth.

“We hereby warn Nairaland and all those who have spread false information to remove this misinformation from their websites and platforms within the next 24 hours and offer an unconditional apology to Governor Zulum, his son, and the entire family, or face legal action.” The Governor will also not hesitate to take legal action against any media outlet that continues to spread this defamatory information through its platform.

“We would like to inform the public that none of Governor Zulum’s sons have been arrested, charged, or involved in any unlawful activity anywhere.

“We urge the public to be cautious when consuming and sharing information, especially if it comes from unverified sources and blogs rather than credible media outlets.

“We urge all media organisations to engage in responsible journalism of truth and factual verification, while also acknowledging the potential harm and psychological trauma that the spread of false information may have caused to the Governor’s family.”
