As heavy rains continue to batter Yenagoa, Bayelsa State’s capital, residents living on the streets opposite the Medical University face serious challenges as floods worsen.

The situation has been exacerbated by the construction of a new road, which allegedly clogged drainage systems and worsened flooding in the area.

Residents have expressed frustration and despair, with one anonymous resident stating, “Our compound is always flooded when it rains. If you come here when it is raining, you will undoubtedly swim within the compound.”

Flooding has caused significant property damage and disruptions in daily life, forcing residents to raise their belongings and sleep on the floor until the water recedes.
The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) previously predicted that approximately 19 states, including Bayelsa, would experience flash flooding this year.

In anticipation of the floods, the Bayelsa State Government has announced plans to identify higher ground on which to build makeshift relief camps.
Residents are pleading with the government to intervene and provide assistance, as many cannot afford the costs of relocating or repairing the damage caused by the floods. The situation highlights the importance of taking proactive measures to address climate change challenges while also ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable communities.
