Yoruba Elders Urge Tinubu To Become A Hero By Embracing Restructuring
The Council of Yoruba Elders (CYE), has urged past Nigerian rulers especially President Bola Tinubu, to embrace the country’s restructuring and be recognised as heroes.
During the launch of his three books and N100m fund-raising event at the House of Chiefs, Parliament Building, Secretariat, Ibadan, Dr. Victor Taiwo, Secretary General of CYE, a pro-democracy and human rights defender, blamed all surviving leaders for the country’s problems.
The books released are “Nigeria on a Keg of Gunpowder,” “A Treaty for Peace in a Multi-Religious State,” and “African Time, Black Man’s Tragedy.”
In his speech at the event, titled “At The Point of Candour,” Taiwo stated that he chose to point accusing fingers at the country’s past and present leaders for the roles they played in leading the country to its current predicament.
His words “A few people have questioned why I chose to go for the rulers of yesterday who shaped our woes today.
“The country’s surviving leaders include General Dr. Yakubu Gowon, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, General Ibrahim Babangida, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, General Muhammadu Buhari, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
“At the risk of sounding hypocritical for the sake of ingratiation, each of them has contributed to the effects of misrule that are currently eating the country alive.
“General Gowon’s main offence was claiming that Nigeria’s problem was not money but how to spend it. Nowadays, we are all aware of the consequences.
“The main offence of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was stating that the best candidate might not win the election. Nowadays, we are all aware of the consequences.
“General Ibrahim Babangida’s primary offence was the annulment of the June 12 election. Nowadays, we are all aware of the consequences.
“The main offence of General Abdulsalami Abubakar was imposing a constitution on the country written by a clique of handpicked people and presented in the name of ‘We Nigerians.’ We all know the consequences today.
“Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s primary offence was the failure to implement the 2014 CONFAB agreement. Nowadays, we are all aware of the consequences.
“General Muhammadu Buhari’s primary offence was his complete lack of governance skills. Nowadays, we are all aware of the consequences.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was accused of unilaterally removing oil subsidies. We are all aware of the effect today.
“Why am I bold enough to say this in front of the leaders who are expected to attend in person or by proxy? All of the world’s forces and hypocrisy cannot erode history. Nobody has ever been successful at this.
“All of the leaders have played roles that have contributed to the country’s current problems. But there has always been room for repentance and restitution since the days of the scriptures, and the villain of yesterday can become a hero of today.”
