Ex-Super Eagles Keeper Demands Ban On Victor Osimhen For “Irresponsible” Outburst
Former Super Eagles goal keeper Ndah Peterside has called for decisive action against Victor Osimhen in response to the striker’s controversial social media comments. Peterside described Osimhen’s actions as “irresponsible” and suggested that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) consider banning him from the national team to avoid similar incidents in the future.
During an Instagram Live session on Saturday, Osimhen openly criticised outgoing Super Eagles coach Finidi George, sparking a controversy.
The embattled coach previously expressed disappointment with the NFF and a key member of the team, stating, “It appears that Osimhen chooses the games he plays for Nigeria and he (Finidi) cannot beg him to play for his country.”
Osimhen’s comments came shortly before George’s resignation, after a challenging tenure that included a draw against South Africa in Uyo and a 2-1 defeat to Benin in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Osimhen, who missed both of Nigeria’s recent matches, expressed his displeasure with George, accusing him of disrespect for not allowing him to stay with the team in camp during the qualifiers.
In response, Peterside expressed his disappointment with Osimhen, emphasising the need for the NFF to take a firm stance on the issue. “I believe action should be taken, or he should be barred from competing for the national team,” Peterside stated. “If we allow this to continue, it will not bode well for Nigeria.” Men who have served and sacrificed everything for our great country deserve to be respected. Our football must be made more sane.”
Peterside also requested that Osimhen apologise for his actions. “He needs to come out and apologise for what he said to Finidi,” Peterside wrote on social media. “Finidi George is legendary. You do not simply open your mouth and say things that are unpleasant. If you have any issues with the man, pick up the phone and call him. “That is what responsible people do.”
Peterside went on to say, “Osimhen has simply demonstrated a lack of responsibility, which is unexpected. I believe the NFF should contact Osimhen and ask him to apologise. He needs to apologise for saying certain things. Our national team is sacred; when we wore the jersey, we honoured it and the people who came before us. He is not the first, nor will he be the last. He should publicly apologise to former footballers, the NFF, Finidi, and Nigerians.
This incident has sparked a wider debate about player conduct and the respect owed to those who have made significant contributions to Nigerian football. The NFF’s response to Peterside’s call to action will most likely set a precedent for how similar issues are handled in the future.
