The Anambra Police Command has urged residents of the state not to participate in alleged planned protests.

On Tuesday, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Nnaghe Obono Itam, issued a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, Superintendent of Police, advising Ndi Anambra and residents to dissociate themselves from any act that threatens public peace and national unity.
Nonetheless, he stated that the Command will carry out its mandate of ensuring that no individual or group of individuals violates the fundamental human rights of others, particularly the rights to freedom of movement and the right to human dignity.

Part of the statement read: “This affirmation is given after a critical threat analysis by the Command based on the information and intelligent reports of persons and groups mobilising for a protest on June 12, 2024, Democracy Day, a day set aside to commemorate the restoration of democracy in the country. The police believe that the protest has the potential to disrupt all commercial activities and obstruct the free flow of traffic in the state.

“The Command, while acknowledging the right of individuals or groups to advocate for any interest, wishes to emphasise the importance of adhering to the existing laws governing such activities; and deployed Police Operatives to various strategic areas, tasked with ensuring the safety of lives and property, free flow of traffic, and, most importantly, a peaceful environment.”
