Tinubu Reaffirms Nigeria’s Commitment To Global Efforts To Mitigate Climate Impacts
President Bola Tinubu has expressed Nigeria’s commitment to global efforts to reduce climate impacts and promote sustainable development.
He made this commitment at the 4th Nations International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which was held in Antigua and Barbuda under the theme “Charting the Course Towards Resilient Prosperity”.
President Tinubu, who was represented by Minister of Environment Hon. Balarabe Lawal, stated: “We must remind ourselves of the collective responsibility to support the sustainable development of small island nations that face unique and devastating challenges.”
He lamented that “Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are at the forefront of the global environmental crisis due to climate change and other factors such as pollution and biodiversity loss.” Despite contributing less than one per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, these countries bear a disproportionate share of the consequences of climate change, including rising sea levels, increased frequency of extreme weather events, and the degradation of marine ecosystems.
“These factors pose existential threats to the livelihoods and cultures of millions of people in these areas. Innovative adaptation strategies, as well as strong international support and partnerships, are required to improve and build resilience in these vulnerable islands.”
He stated: “Nigeria stands in solidarity with SIDS and is committed to contributing to global efforts to mitigate climate impacts and promote sustainable development.” Despite these challenges, SIDS have opportunities to transition to a green economy; they have both untapped terrestrial and oceanic natural resources such as fish stocks, minerals, potential pharmaceutical products, and renewable energy sources such as wind, sun, ocean, wave, hydro, and geothermal.
“If properly leveraged, SIDS have the potential to take the lead in defining models of sustainability and human well-being while transitioning to a Green Economy. The Nigerian government addressed environmental issues such as pollution and flooding in our major island, Lagos state, by establishing and empowering government ministries and agencies responsible for the environment to implement strong waste management programmes.”
He stated that the challenges faced by small island developing states are a reflection of larger global issues that require collective action, insisting that “by supporting SIDS, we are also advancing the broader agenda of sustainable development and environmental stewardship.” We must work with SIDS to prioritise investments in climate resilience infrastructure such as sea defences, early warning systems, and sustainable land and water management practices.
He stated that collaboration with international financial institutions and the private sector is critical to mobilising the necessary resources. SIDS’ economic vulnerabilities are exacerbated by their heavy reliance on tourism and external markets. Diversifying their economies by promoting sustainable industries such as renewable energy, fisheries, and agriculture can result in more resilient economic structures.”
He went on to say that “access to concessional financing is critical for SIDS to address their development challenges.” We must advocate for tailored financial mechanisms that recognise SIDS’ specific circumstances and provide them with the fiscal space they require to invest in sustainable development and create a more climate-resilient environment. Regional cooperation among SIDS, as well as partnerships with larger economies, can drive innovative solutions and the sharing of best practices. Nigeria is committed to collaborating with SIDS and other countries to promote knowledge exchange and capacity-building initiatives.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the principles of equity, justice, and shared prosperity, stating that: “The Lands, Water, and Air all belong to humanity, and together, we can chart a course towards a more resilient and sustainable environment for our children and future generations.”
