Senate Set To Probe Buhari’s N30trn Ways And Means Allegations
The Senate has established an ad hoc committee to look into the N30 trillion Ways and Means secured from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) by former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate, inaugurated the 16-member ad-hoc Committee, led by Senator Isa Jibril, and urged the committee to approach the task with a sense of responsibility, patriotism, professionalism, and integrity, adding that they should not leave any stone unturned in their pursuit of truth.
According to Akpabio, the formation of this committee demonstrates the Senate’s unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance. It reflects our dedication to addressing the Nigerian people’s concerns while upholding democratic values.
“I implore the members of this prestigious committee to approach their duties with the utmost patriotism, professionalism, and integrity. Your investigation must be objective and fair, with the public interest and the welfare of our country always in mind. We must look everywhere to find the truth. As a result, conduct thorough investigations and gather information to help the Senate pass legislation for the betterment of our country.
“The success of this ad hoc committee is dependent on collaboration, cooperation, and a strong commitment to the greater good. Let us put aside our personal and political agendas and focus solely on the task at hand. We can work together to ensure that Nigeria’s Ways and Means are managed prudently, efficiently, and in accordance with the law.
Akpabio informed the committee that confidentiality is essential to their work, stating that the information and data “we gather during our investigations are sensitive and must be handled with the utmost care and discretion.” Following strict protocols will ensure the security and integrity of the information you discover.”
He also emphasised that in carrying out their mandate, they “engage with relevant stakeholders, experts, and organisations.” Their valuable insights and perspectives will enhance the credibility and breadth of your findings and recommendations. I encourage you to remain open to constructive input and feedback while leveraging the knowledge and expertise of others to achieve your common goal.
“As you embark on this critical mission, please keep communication lines open with the general public. The Nigerian people must be kept informed of your progress and findings, as their trust in your work is critical. You must demonstrate your dedication to serving our country with distinction and honour.
He reminds them of the importance of the task at hand, emphasising that “the future of our nation rests on your shoulders, and you must approach this task with grave seriousness and determination.” Work tirelessly to ensure that Nigeria’s Ways and Means are managed responsibly, based on the principles of justice, fairness, and the common good.
“I am grateful to each member of this committee for accepting the responsibility of serving our country in this capacity. Your dedication and commitment to this cause are truly admirable, and I am confident that you will perform your duties with excellence.
“I wish you all the best in your endeavour, and I pledge my full support in achieving our objectives in forming this committee. Let us uphold the values of transparency, integrity, and accountability as we work to promote responsible Ways and Means management in Nigeria.”
Akpabio, on the other hand, stated that the committee, which was formed in response to the report of the Joint Committees on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions; Finance; National Planning; Agriculture; and Appropriations after consulting with the Federal Government’s Economic Management Team, is critical because it is charged with investigating the ways and means, including the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme.
The committee’s duties last six weeks, and the thorough investigations were intended to uncover information.
