Onitsha Building Collapse: Obi Joins In Rescue Operation, Condoles With Victims
Mr Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate, has expressed sadness over the deaths caused by the building collapse at Ochanja Market in Onitsha yesterday, while urging the public to strictly follow engineering and building standards for their own safety.
In a press release, Obi, who participated in the rescue operation, lamented the tragic loss of life and injuries caused by the incident, emphasising that the victims were ordinary people trying to get by.
Obi thanked those who helped rescue trapped victims and urged the government to investigate the root cause of the collapse.
He advised strict compliance with regulations governing the building and construction industry.
“I firmly believe that building collapses will be a thing of the past if we adhere to standards and procedures.
“Only trained, licensed, and professional personnel should handle building projects, and materials must meet project specifications,” Obi stated.
He also urged the government to implement measures to ensure that building projects nationwide meet required standards.
Obi expressed his condolences to families who had lost loved ones and prayed for the injured to recover quickly and the deceased to rest in peace.
All of the life ambulances in the Anambra State Rapid Response Unit were dispatched to the scene, including ours from Peter Obi.
One notable fact is that approximately five out of every six vehicles present at the time bore the inscription “Donated by the ANAMBRA State Government under Governor Peter Obi.”
