NIDCOM To Ensure Justice In Alleged Police Killing Of Nigerian Student In Canada
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), has stated that the commission will see to it that justice is done in the case of the suspected murder of 19-year-old Afolabi Stephen, a Nigerian student, in Manitoba, Canada, even if she called the act terrible.
In a sympathy statement sent by NIDCOM’s Director of Media and Public Relations and Protocols, Abdurrahman Balogun, Dabiri-Erewa expressed her dismay at the news.
“We are in contact with the Nigerian mission in Ottawa, who have received assurances from Canadian authorities that investigations into the regrettable incident have commenced and will be comprehensive,” the statement stated.
We extend our sincere sympathies to Afolabi’s family and friends, and we ask God to grant his kind and innocent soul to rest in perfect peace.
Though the details of his death are still sketchy, the Winnipeg, Manitoba Police Department, in a statement posted on its website via Winnipeg.ca, said its officers responded to a call about a young male who was acting “erratically”.
The police noted that upon arrival, efforts to calm the young man proved abortive which led to the discharge of a firearm by the police which ultimately led to his death.
