NBS Restates Commitment To Generate Accurate, Quality Statistics For Nation-Building

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says it will redouble efforts to generate quality and accurate data, using Innovation and technology in the development of statistics for nation-building.

The Bureau has also pledged to strengthen capacity building, partnership and collaboration and to work more closely with critical stakeholders to ensure an effective crafting of the new statistics strategy.

Statistician-General of the Federation, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran stated this at the ongoing Southern States stakeholders’ workshop on the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) Phase III, 2024-2028 held in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

Adeniran says the aforementioned guiding principles would enable the effective crafting of the new statistics strategy.

He emphasised the vital need for a robust strategy to guide the growth and development of the system that produces the statistics that all stakeholders would rely on for their respective work.

Speaking with newsmen at the sideline of the opening ceremony, the Statistician General recalled that previous statistic strategies could not be effectively implementation due to the low involvement of stakeholders.

Declaring the occasion open, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno applauded the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) for raising the bar on both national and state statistical systems.

In his words “I commend the National Bureau of Statistics, especially the Statistician-General of the Federation for his giant strides to modernize not only National but State Statistical System to enable production of official statistics that all stakeholders would rely on for their respective programme and projects”, he said.

Represented by the state Commissioner for Economic Development, Mr. Emem Bob, Governor Eno said the choice of Akwa Ibom State to host the South-South zone of the workshop was timely, even as it aligns with the ongoing efforts to establish a modernized Akwa Ibom State Bureau of Statistics (AK-SBS).

He hinted to his guests that the Akwa Ibom State government had passed and assented to the Statistical Act and would soon set up a board to that effect.

The Governor who said the step was taken because the state considers statistics a public good, encouraged all participants to contribute diligently to the new NSDS to address gaps and challenges hindering the production of unified data that accurately reflects current emerging realities in our society.

In his welcome address earlier, the State Director of Statistics Mr Peter Akpan said official Statistics are indispensable for effective governance, especially in this era of data.

Akpan commended the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), particularly the Statistician-General of the Federation for his untiring efforts in modernizing the National and State Statistical System.

He, however, made a case for concerted efforts in modernizing the State and National Statistical System through the internationally recognized framework, the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS).
