Crisis Brews As PDP Fails To Comply With Court Orders

A crisis appears to be brewing in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the party’s refusal to comply with court rulings, as the party’s leadership refused to recognise Sunday Ude-Okoye as PDP National Secretary.

Remember that at last month’s zonal meeting in Enugu, Ude-Okoye, a former National Youth Leader, was chosen to serve out the mandate of the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, who is currently the party’s flag bearer in the Imo State governorship race, which is taking place this weekend.

Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, stated that the party’s constitution does not require an elected member of the National Working Committee (NWC) who is running for public office to resign unless the person chooses to step down on their own, PDP South East stakeholders believe the zone is currently underrepresented in the NWC.

He said that “the secretariat is running smoothly and effectively, therefore, there is no need to look for a replacement for the National Secretary.”

The National Working Committee (NWC) chaired by Ambassador Umar Damagun has refused to recognize Udeh-Okoye to serve out Anyanwu’s tenure, prompting the zone to seek redress in court.

The Enugu State High Court, on the other hand, has given an order allowing Hon. SKE Udeh-Okoye to serve as National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, through substituted means, as well as the party’s National Working Committee.

This was mentioned in court papers seen on Friday plastered on the gate of the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

The PDP’s South East Zone selected Udeh-Okoye as National Secretary to replace Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the Imo State PDP Governorship candidate in Saturday’s elections.
