The Lagos Icon Lions Club, Ogudu, Creates Awareness On Cancer

The Lagos Icon Lions Club, Ogudu, Lagos has staged an awareness walk to enlighten Nigerians about the prevalence of cancer in the country.

The event was held at Ogudu, Ojota, Lagos under the leadership of the President, Lion George Kayode Tanimowo who expressed deep concern over the number of people dying or being hospitalised for pediatric cancer on daily basis in the country.

“If we look at the statistics of people dying or hospitalized for pediatric cancer we will appreciate the importance of this awareness campaign to help save lives.

“Available data showed that over 300,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year with the average age of a child who is diagnosed to be just six years old,” the president noted.

To this end, members of the Lagos Icon Lions club deemed it necessary to do a health walk in the community to raise pediatric awareness, by holding an educational talk, sharing flyers with visible banners and doing a five km walk to create awareness within the community.

He noted with enthusiasm that the Health Walk was a huge success due to the active participation of all.

The chairperson, Marketing Communication of the club, Dr. Akeem Olayinka-Martins emphasised the need for every member to be actively involved in the awareness campaign in view of the seriousness of cancer in society.

He described the disease as the silent killer, which early detection would go a long way to help victims.

The walk also had some senior members of the club participating with a promise to be actively involved in sensitising members of the public to the prevalence of cancer in society and the need for early detection for prompt treatment.

Among the senior members that participated are Lions Ngozi Nnaji, Wale Afolabi former region chair, Benjamin Emeka Okwuadi, Zonal Chair, Christiana Ijeoma Okoh, Henry Emole Agbai, Nwogu-Madu Ijeoma Lilian, Komolafe Idowu, First Vice, Solomon Abor, Abiola Ayoka Okoya, and visiting second vice DG aspirant, Folasade Shotmide.

Others are Lions Duke Odinde, Hameed Okenla, Talabi Oluomo and another visiting President, Frankline and Taiwo Olusegun.
