Obi Condemns ‘Double Standards’ In Ibom Air Incident, Demands Equal Justice
Peter Obi, former Presidential candidate and prominent political figure, has strongly criticised the handling of the recent Ibom Air incident, highlighting what he perceives as a glaring double standard in the treatment of individuals involved.
The incident, which involved a passenger, Miss Comfort Emmanson, reportedly assaulting Ibom Air crew members and another individual delaying a flight, has sparked outrage and debate across social media.
Obi, taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, began by expressing his sincere apologies to the Ibom Air crew who were reportedly assaulted.
“We must, as a society, learn and uphold good conduct, as it is a true measure of success and decent living,” he stated.
However, his criticism quickly shifted to the alleged disproportionate response faced by Emmanson. Obi condemned the “dehumanising treatment” meted out to her, specifically referencing reports that she was stripped publicly.
“Stripping her publicly was not only unnecessary but also represents the height of rascality and abuse by our agencies,” he asserted.
He further questioned the swiftness with which Emmanson was taken to court and remanded, contrasting it with the apparent inaction towards the other individual who reportedly delayed the flight.
“It is unacceptable that she was hurriedly taken to court and remanded, while someone who visibly held a plane from taking off and put hundreds of lives at risk is still at large, with government agencies and some state officials speaking up for him to be forgiven,” Obi wrote.
Obi painted a picture of unequal justice, arguing that the incident is symptomatic of a larger problem within the Nigerian justice system.
“This case is not just about one young woman, it is about the double standards that poison our justice system.
“Justice in Nigeria must never be about who is poor or powerless versus who has influence or access to government officials.”
He emphasised that while Emmanson is currently incarcerated, the other individual involved has not faced similar consequences, raising concerns about selective application of the law.
“While Ms. Comfort Emmanson is in jail, the other offender who committed a more severe offence has not been held to the same standard. He has neither been arrested nor arraigned in any court.”
Obi called for a country where justice is “fair, equal, and not selective,” particularly against women who are perceived as vulnerable.
He also drew a stark comparison between Emmanson’s alleged offense and the rampant corruption often perpetrated by those in positions of power.
“This young lady’s offence does not compare to the crimes committed daily by those parading themselves as ‘excellencies’ while looting public funds without consequence, and yet they have not been stripped or dehumanised in the name of justice.”
He demanded accountability from the Minister of Aviation and other relevant authorities, urging them to provide explanations for the perceived double standards.
“The Minister of Aviation and other relevant authorities owe the public an explanation for these double standards in their adjudication. Justice must be just, or it is nothing at all.”
The former presidential candidate reiterated his vision for a “New Nigeria,” based on the rule of law and justice for all.
“The rule of law based on justice for all must remain the guidepost of our democracy. A new Nigeria is POssible.”
Obi’s comments have already ignited further debate online, with many users echoing his concerns about the fairness and impartiality of the Nigerian justice system.
The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equitable treatment and accountability within the country.
