Dr. Segun Sowunmi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has declared Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, as the only “authentic” candidate for the 2027 presidential race.

Sowunmi’s unexpected endorsement occurred during a talk show hosted by the Obedient Movement, powered by the Cyrus Group and the Free Nigeria Foundation, in Abuja on Friday as part of May Day celebrations.

“You know I am a PDP member, but the future of Nigeria lies with Peter Obi,” Sowunmi stated emphatically. “He is the only genuine candidate; all others are frauds.”

Sowunmi went on to praise Obi’s dedication to finding solutions to Nigeria’s problems, contrasting him with politicians who merely wait for opportunities without actively working to improve the country.

“I am very uncomfortable that we are busy passing the baton between the North and the South West, leaving the most important section of the country, the Igbo, even though they have Obi, who is the future,” he added.

He urged the Obedient Movement and the Labour Party to be inspired by the Labour Party in Brazil and work hard to bring about the necessary change in Nigeria.

Other prominent figures spoke at the event, which focused on the hardships faced by Nigerian workers and the nation as a whole.

Senator Nenadi Usman, Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, emphasised the party’s commitment to workers’ welfare, highlighting five key initiatives: living wages, labour rights, non-negotiable health and housing programs, and strict labour law enforcement. She contended that workers, as creators of wealth, should not live in poverty.

“They can lock everyone, but they cannot lock God,” Senator Usman said, urging supporters to stand firm and not compromise their principles.

Poet Dike Chukwumerije urged Nigerians to prepare for unavoidable change, even if it takes generations, for the benefit of future generations.

FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe challenged the Obedient Movement and Nigeria’s youth to be more assertive in claiming ownership of the country.

“You are too quiet in this country, and we are going down in this country,” she said. Senator Kingibe then engaged constituents in a question-and-answer session to address their concerns.

Dr. Moses Paul, coordinator of the talk show and Director of the Free Nigeria Foundation, warned against complacency in the run-up to the 2027 elections, declaring a “never again” mantra.

He specifically addressed FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, urging him to stop intimidating Abuja residents over their electoral choices.

Bongos Ikwue, a well-known gospel musician, attended the event, as did other Labour veterans and elders.

This event demonstrates growing dissatisfaction with the current political landscape and suggests a possible shift in allegiances as the 2027 presidential election approaches.
