Peter Obi Honours Nigerian Workers On International Workers’ Day
*Calls For Investments In Education, Job Creation To Strengthen Labour Force*
Mr. Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate, has congratulated Nigerian workers on their unwavering commitment and invaluable contributions to national development as the country observes International Workers’ Day.
In a statement issued to commemorate the occasion, Obi praised the resilience and hard work of Nigerian workers in all sectors—public and private—despite the current economic and political challenges.
He emphasised that their legitimate labour remains the driving force behind the nation’s engine.
“Today, we have the opportunity to recognise every Nigerian worker—at all levels of government, across agencies, private industries, and business sectors. Your legitimate labours provide the energy that propels our country,” Obi stated.
Highlighting the stark realities facing workers in the country, Obi drew attention to the concerning employment figures, saying,
“Despite recent reconfigurations of our economic indices, Nigeria’s unemployment and underemployment rate stands at more than 35%, with youth unemployment and underemployment soaring above 45%, one of the highest in the world. These alarming statistics exacerbate various forms of criminality and social vices.
Obi reiterated his long-held belief that aggressive investment in the nation’s productive workforce is the surest path to economic recovery.
He believes that targeted investments in education, healthcare, job creation, and small business support are the only way to achieve this transformation.
“As a nation, we must create an environment that encourages growth, provides opportunities, and ensures equitable compensation.
“We must recognise the dignity of labour and foster a culture of respect and appreciation for all workers,” he stated.
Obi reaffirmed his commitment to shifting Nigeria’s economy from consumption to production, emphasising the need to create a society that values productivity, integrity, and honest labour.
“As we celebrate today, let us continue to work together for a better future, one in which every worker can thrive and their talents and skills are matched by opportunities,” Obi said.
