US Contributes $6.5m To Nigeria’s Flood-Related Humanitarian Needs

The United States, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is donating more than $6.5 million to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to address flood-related humanitarian needs in Nigeria.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by USAID’s Development Outreach and Communications Team, the funding is part of the agency’s Fiscal Year 2024 support and will allow local partners to respond to flooding and other disasters.

According to the statement, IOM will allocate $3 million to address flood-related humanitarian needs across the country.

Flooding has affected more than 619,000 people in 29 Nigerian states since mid-August, according to the National Emergency Management Agency. The floods have killed 210 people, displaced nearly 228,700, and damaged over 84,800 homes.

According to the statement, this response is part of a larger humanitarian assistance initiative. In Fiscal Year 2024, USAID will provide nearly $100 million in previously announced funding to Nigeria to address the urgent needs of those affected by disasters, including floods.

Our long-standing partnership is founded on a long history of providing humanitarian assistance throughout the country.”
