Media Group Hails Tinubu’s Ward-Based Stimulus As ‘Innovative’
The Tinubu Media Support Group (TMSG) has lauded the newly introduced ward-based economic stimulus program, describing it as a prime example of the innovative thinking President Bola Tinubu is bringing to governance at the federal level.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Emeka Nwankpa, and Secretary, Dapo Okubanjo, the group characterised the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme (RHWDP) as a creative and effective way to directly reach grassroots communities while respecting the principles of inter-governmental responsibility.
“At a time when many Nigerians are concerned that improved federal allocations to states and local governments are not translating into tangible benefits at the grassroots level, it is heartening to see the federal government thinking outside the box to ensure that all parts of the country are included in the development agenda,” the statement read.
“For us, this initiative clearly articulates the federal government’s objective with the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme (RHWDP), which aims to directly engage with the country’s 8,809 administrative wards across all 36 states.”
“Judging from President Tinubu’s remarks during his engagement with state governors on this matter, the federal government is firmly committed to stimulating economic activity at the grassroots level through a ward-based development strategy.”
“We note that the government plans to support economic activities for a minimum of 1,000 economically active individuals in smaller wards and 2,000 in larger ones, through a collaborative arrangement between federal, state, and local governments.
“We see this as a creative endeavor to generate employment, reduce poverty, enhance food security, and strengthen social protection in all wards, potentially impacting a minimum of 8.8 million people.”
“While 8.8 million may seem like a small number in a country with a population exceeding 200 million, we view it as a strategic move to establish a direct federal presence that will indirectly address local needs.
“We understand that the program will be funded with increased revenues accrueing to the Federation Account, in addition to other federal and state initiatives.”
“Although a National Steering Committee, comprising representatives from all six geopolitical zones, is expected to oversee implementation, we are confident that the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme will significantly contribute to decentralising development and bringing its benefits directly to Nigerians at the lowest levels of government.”
TMSG further emphasised that the ward-based development program will empower local communities and generate both direct and indirect job opportunities within local economies.
