National Assembly Suspends Plenary in Honour of Late President Buhari
The National Assembly has put legislative activities on hold following the passing of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London.
In an official statement issued Monday by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, both chambers Senate and House of Representatives agreed to reschedule plenary sessions to Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
According to Ogunlana, the break in proceedings is meant to honour the late leader’s contributions to the country and to enable lawmakers to fully participate in his funeral arrangements.
“All members are encouraged to adjust their schedules to attend the burial rites of the former President,” the statement noted.
President Muhammadu Buhari, who ruled Nigeria first as a military Head of State from 1984 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, was remembered by the legislature as a statesman committed to the unity and integrity of Nigeria.
“May Almighty Allah grant him eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus,” the statement concluded.
Meanwhile, tributes have continued to pour in from across the nation. The Southern Senators Forum, in a condolence statement signed by its Chairman, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, described Buhari as “a towering figure in Nigerian politics” whose life embodied discipline, integrity, and patriotism.
The statement read in part, “From his early military career to his civilian presidency, Buhari remained a symbol of simplicity and unwavering commitment to the Nigerian project.
“He lived a life marked by humility, selflessness, and an unrelenting pursuit of accountability in governance.
“Despite wielding significant power, he remained down-to-earth, choosing a frugal and modest lifestyle that inspired many.”
The late President’s legacy, according to the Forum, will be remembered for setting a standard in personal integrity and dedication to national service.
