Plateau Christians Protest Killings, Demand Justice From Government
Thousands of Christians in Plateau State, led by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), marched peacefully to Jos’ Government House on Easter Monday to protest the state’s ongoing killings of innocent villagers.
The Plateau State branch of CAN organised the demonstration, which featured participants from various Christian denominations dressed in black as a symbol of mourning and solidarity with the victims of the attacks.
The Plateau State CAN Chairman, Rev. Fr. Polycarp Lubo, led the procession, accompanied by prominent religious figures such as the President of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), Rev. Dr. Amos Mohzo; the Plateau State Chairman of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Pastor Dunga Gomwalk; and the President of the Gideon and Funmi Para-Mallam Peace Foundation, Rev. Gideon Para-Mallam.
The protesters started their march at Fwawevl Junction and marched to the Plateau State Government House in Little Rayfield, Jos, where they planned to formally register their grievances and express their deep concern about the ongoing attacks on communities throughout the state.
The demonstrators aimed to highlight the urgent need for increased security and long-term solutions to the ongoing violence.
When the protestors arrived at Government House in Rayfield, Jos, Governor Caleb Mutfwang met with them.
He listened to their concerns and assured them that his administration was actively working to address the security situation. Governor Mutfwang emphasised the government’s commitment to restoring peace and stability in the affected areas.
“My government is in control of the situation,” Governor Mutfwang told the protesters. He also pledged that the perpetrators and sponsors of terrorism in Plateau State would be apprehended and prosecuted as soon as possible, signalling a firm commitment to combating regional insecurity.
The Governor’s response gave the grieving community a glimmer of hope and emphasised the government’s responsibility to protect its citizens. The Christian community now expects concrete action to follow the Governor’s assurances.
