Oyo State Mourns Death Of Former Governor Omololu Olunloyo
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Governor Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, describing him as one of the state’s and Nigeria’s most intellectual former leaders.
The governor issued a statement on Sunday, expressing his condolences to the Olunloyo family, the people of Ibadanland, and the entire Oyo State community.
He lamented the death of the renowned mathematician and administrator, who died just before turning 90.
“On behalf of the government and the good people of Oyo State, I express my heartfelt condolences to Dr. Omololu Olunloyo’s family, the people of Ibadanland, and Oyo State on the death of the former governor,” Governor Makinde said.
He emphasised the importance of Dr. Olunloyo’s contribution to the state, saying, “With Dr. Olunloyo, we have lost another icon. This time, we lost a highly cerebral and patriotic leader who served our great state in its early years.”
Governor Makinde admitted that he was looking forward to celebrating Dr. Olunloyo’s 90th birthday, which would have occurred on April 14th. However, he acknowledged the inevitability of death, saying,
“However, we must submit to God’s will, who gives and takes lives as He sees fit.”
He also mentioned the state government’s efforts to honour Dr. Olunloyo during his lifetime.
“My joy is that our government immortalised and honoured Pa Olunloyo during his lifetime, and he was present to witness it, when we named the Ibadan Airport Road and the Leisure Park on the axis after him in recognition of his service to the state,” Makinde said.
The governor concluded his statement by praying for the deceased and offering comfort to the bereaved family. “May the Lord grant rest to his soul and give his family the strength to bear his death.”
The Olunloyo family has yet to announce details about the funeral arrangements.
