Peter Obi Denounces Association With ‘Toxic Politics,’ Reaffirms Non-Membership Of APC
Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has categorically denied any association with “toxic politics” and any affiliation with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This statement, issued via his X handle on Friday, follows a social media report that allegedly linked Obi’s name to an APC gathering.
“I discovered a report circulating on social media about an APC gathering in which my name was mentioned,” Obi stated.
“Let me be absolutely clear: I do not engage in toxic politics, blackmail, or other forms of political manipulation. My name should not be linked to such narratives.”
He emphasised his non-affiliation with the ruling party, saying, “For the avoidance of doubt, both now and in the future, I am not a member of the APC, nor am I intending to join.”
Obi emphasised his commitment to integrity, fairness, and issue-based political engagement, arguing that aspirants should be evaluated on competence, capacity, and compassion.
He also discussed ongoing political activities within the APC in Anambra State, focussing on Valentine Ozigbo, who recently joined the party.
Obi argued that Ozigbo, like all other candidates, should be evaluated based on their leadership abilities, emphasising that elections and primaries should not be reduced to “toxic narratives or personal attacks.”
“Political decisions should be guided by credibility, vision, and the ability to deliver real change – not by dragging people into toxic debates, blackmail, or unnecessary controversy,” he said.
Obi has called for free, fair, and credible primaries across all parties ahead of the Anambra State governorship election in November. He called on all parties, including the Labour Party, to ensure a transparent and democratic process.
“As we approach the Anambra State governorship election in November, I sincerely hope that all parties, including mine, will ensure a transparent and democratic process, as well as conduct credible, fair primaries,” he said.
Obi concluded by expressing his hope that the upcoming election will give Nigeria the opportunity to embrace true democracy, which he described as “elusive” in the country today.
He wished all political parties success in holding free and fair primaries and urged stakeholders to maintain justice throughout the process.
“We must reject toxic politics because it is the only way to achieve the democratic nation we currently lack,” he concluded, repeating his campaign slogan, “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
The statement comes at a critical time, as political parties prepare for the governorship election, and Obi’s remarks are likely to influence the political discourse and strategies of various stakeholders in Anambra State.
