The Nigerian government has officially commenced the reconstruction of the Alau Dam in Maiduguri, following its catastrophic collapse on September 10, 2024.

The dam’s failure resulted in widespread flooding that submerged a significant portion of Borno State’s capital and surrounding areas, claiming several lives and displacing thousands.

A groundbreaking ceremony held Saturday marked the start of the restoration and rehabilitation project. Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, emphasised the project’s importance in restoring the dignity and livelihoods of those affected by the disaster.

The dam, built between 1984 and 1986, served as a crucial source of irrigation and potable water for Maiduguri and its environs, drawing water from the Ngadda River, a tributary of Lake Chad.
