WOMAN Raises Awareness on Critical Health Issues In Kpansia Community
The Women Organised for Mentorship and Advocacy Network (WOMAN), a non-governmental organisation, carried out an important community outreach program in Kpansia, focussing on critical health issues such as cancer prevention, cholera prevention, female genital mutilation (FGM), and vaccinations.
The initiative aimed to educate families and community members about preventative measures and the value of vaccinations.
Lady Eunice Nnachi, Executive Director of WOMAN, emphasised the preventability of cholera through simple but effective measures.
“Cholera is preventable if we consistently wash our hands and avoid eating street food that could be contaminated,” she said. “Keeping a clean environment and providing proper childcare are critical.”
Nnachi strongly condemned FGM, urging parents and guardians to stop the practice, stating that it violates girls’ rights and is harmful to their reproductive health.
Mrs. Timi Ebiringa Tobi, Executive Director of Voice of the Ijaw Girl Child, spoke about the widespread issue of gender-based violence (GBV).
She encouraged women and girls to speak out against all forms of physical, sexual, and mental abuse, and she urged parents and carers to be vigilant child protectors.
Ebizimo Agedah, Secretary of WOMAN, emphasised the importance of the Big Catch-up vaccination exercise, urging parents to ensure that their children aged 0 to 5 years receive the necessary vaccines, especially those who have missed routine immunisations. Agedah emphasised that the vaccinations are free, safe, and effective.
Pereowei Asingbi, Program Manager at ENWAF, spoke about cancer prevention and encouraged residents to live healthy lifestyles, such as good hygiene and regular health checkups.
The outreach program demonstrates WOMAN’s commitment to improving families, community development, and long-term growth through sensitisation, advocacy, and mentorship.
The organization’s efforts in Kpansia are an important step towards improving public health and well-being in the community.
