Yobe State Seeks Moroccan Expertise To Revive Fertiliser Plant

A high-level delegation from Yobe State, Nigeria, is in Morocco to discuss partnering with OCP/Jorf Lasfar, the world’s largest fertiliser company, to revitalise the state’s dormant fertiliser blending plant.

On Thursday, a team led by State Government Secretary Baba Malam Wali paid a visit to the OCP/Jorf Lasfar complex.

The purpose of the visit is to learn about strategies for revitalising the Yobe State fertiliser plant, which is an important component of the state government’s agricultural development plans.

Amine Jamaleddine, Facility Information Officer at OCP/Jorf Lasfar, emphasised the company’s impressive scale, which includes an annual production capacity of 15 million tonnes of fertiliser and a workforce of approximately 20,000 employees serving global markets.

Jamaleddine expressed OCP/Jorf Lasfar’s willingness to work with Yobe State on the project.

Wali was pleased with the commitment demonstrated by OCP/Jorf Lasfar and the consulting firm African Network Centre, emphasising Governor Mai Mala Buni’s dedication to reviving the fertiliser plant.

He stated that the project’s goals include meeting the state’s fertiliser needs, creating jobs, and increasing export revenue.

Hon. Mustapha Goniri, Commissioner of Agriculture, emphasised the importance of the fertiliser plant’s revival in Yobe State’s ongoing agricultural revolution.

He emphasised the state government’s significant investments in agriculture, such as the free distribution of 100 tractors, solar pumps, irrigation equipment, and other farming inputs to farmers last year, followed by an additional 40 tractors this year. These efforts, he said, are intended to improve food security and export potential.

The African Network Centre expressed confidence in the partnership’s success, praising Governor Buni’s commitment to agricultural development and pledging their full support to make the project a reality.

Governor Buni is expected to accompany the delegation to Morocco to further explore educational partnerships and direct investments in local government areas, according to Mamman Mohammed, the governor’s spokesman.

The partnership with OCP/Jorf Lasfar is expected to significantly improve Yobe State’s food security and economic growth.
