Obi Explains ₦1.5bn Humanitarian Spending, Says ‘Not Self-Promotion, But Duty To Humanity’
Nnewi, Anambra State – Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has defended his significant contributions to humanitarian causes, stating that his recent ₦1.5 billion commitment in 2024 is driven by a deep concern for humanity rather than self-promotion.
During a visit with the Anglican Bishop of Nnewi, Rt. Rev. Ndubisi Obi, Mr. Obi answered questions about his extensive philanthropy.
He recently donated ₦10 million to the College of Nursing Sciences, Amichi and ADON College of Health Technology, Nnewi, demonstrating his ongoing commitment.
“My philanthropy is motivated by the visible impact of these efforts and the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to people’s lives,” Obi explained.
He emphasised that his charitable giving began before his political career, citing his involvement in Haiti’s post-earthquake reconstruction and previous personal contributions to those in need.
Obi was deeply moved by his visit to the Diocesan Rehabilitation Centre for drug abuse victims and a school for special needs children, which he made with Bishop Ndubisi.
He described the Bishop’s dedication to the vulnerable as inspiring, claiming that witnessing such commitment motivates further giving.
“It is impossible not to contribute – not for personal gain, but for the sake of humanity,” he said.
Obi rejected claims that his philanthropy is a public image strategy, insisting that giving back is a moral, spiritual, and societal obligation.
He expressed his willingness to continue supporting such causes as long as he had the means.
“It is not about me,” Obi concluded, “but about the impact we can have together to build a better society.”
His commitment to education, healthcare, and empowerment initiatives remains a prominent feature of his public image.
