Obi Reaffirms Commitment To New Anambra University, Denies Arrest Rumours
Umunya, Anambra State – Former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, has reiterated his unwavering support for the newly established University on the Niger, during the grand opening of its permanent site in Umunya.
The event, presided over by the Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Dr. Henry Ndukuba, saw Obi highlight the transformative power of education and his personal investment in its advancement.
Obi linked the university’s establishment to his administration’s decision to return mission schools to their original owners, a move he credited with revitalizing educational investment in the state.
“The return of schools to the Church was a milestone,” he stated, “inspiring the establishment of new universities that significantly contribute to human capital development.”
He specifically commended Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Owen Nwokolo for his vision in founding the University on the Niger, describing it as a “beacon of hope.”
Obi’s commitment was underscored by a ₦50 million donation in November 2024, which sources say was used to bolster the university’s facilities.
He reaffirmed his dedication to supporting educational institutions, emphasizing his belief in education as a catalyst for national development.
Primate Ndukuba also addressed the gathering, praising Bishop Nwokolo’s initiative and urging support for the university’s vision.
Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna, former Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning under Obi and currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Paul University Awka, shed light on the historical context of the university’s founding.
She highlighted Obi’s role in returning the land to the Church after relocating the NYSC camp, and his investment in upgrading Iyienu Hospital, which now serves as the university’s teaching hospital.
She lauded Obi’s “Government-Church Partnership” as instrumental to the university’s development.
The event concluded with the commissioning of several completed projects by the Primate.
The University on the Niger is expected to significantly enhance Anambra State’s educational landscape.
Obi Denies Arrest Reports:
In a separate development, Mr. Obi issued a statement vehemently denying circulating fake news reports alleging his arrest.
He confirmed his presence at his home in Onitsha, Anambra State, dismissing the reports as false and reiterating that similar fabricated stories have circulated previously.
He urged the public to disregard such rumours and remain focused on national development.
