Obidient Movement Condemns APC’s Death Threat Against Peter Obi
Abuja, Nigeria – January 7, 2025 – The Obidient Movement, a significant political group that supports former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, has issued a harsh rebuke to the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, following his controversial remarks on Arise TV. Morka’s comments, which aired on January 5th, were interpreted as a thinly veiled threat against Obi, sparking widespread outrage and concerns about Nigeria’s democracy.
The statement, released by Yunusa Tanko on behalf of the Obedient Movement on Monday, directly addresses Morka’s statement: “Mr Peter Obi has crossed the line so many times, and he deserves what he gets, and whatever he gets, he should manage it.” The movement categorically condemned the statement as a direct threat to Obi’s life and a dangerous escalation in political tensions.
“We see this as not only an attack on Mr. Peter Obi, but also a warning sign of Nigeria’s descent into authoritarianism under the current administration,” the statement read. Morka’s words were described by the Obidients as reckless, unbecoming of a ruling party spokesperson, and a clear endorsement of violence.
The statement emphasises Obi’s unwavering commitment to issue-based politics, pursuit of solutions to national problems, and adherence to democratic principles. It specifically mentions his recent New Year’s address, which provided a critical analysis of the country’s state and proposed practical solutions, as being completely free of personal attacks or incitement. The movement then raises four critical questions:
Which line did Mr Peter Obi cross?
Who drew this so-called line, and under what authority?
What specific statements or actions of his support such a dire threat?
What exactly will happen to him?
The Obidient Movement calls for clear and transparent answers to these questions, emphasising that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to free expression and life. They claim that Morka’s statement directly contradicts these fundamental rights and is an attempt to silence dissenting voices through intimidation.
The movement also claims that Morka’s threat confirms Obi’s previous claims of coordinated attacks aimed at silencing him and his supporters. They accuse the current administration of prioritising repression over dialogue, intimidation over participation, and threats over democratic debate.
The statement concludes with a stark warning: “If any harm comes to Mr. Peter Obi, his family, or anyone associated with him, the Nigerian government and its agents will be held directly responsible.” The Obedient Movement urges Nigerians and the international community to take note of this troubling pattern of repression and demand accountability from those in power.
The movement promises to remain steadfast in its support for Obi and his vision for Nigeria, urging all citizens to resist the rise of authoritarianism by demanding accountability, justice, and the preservation of democratic values.
They want the security services to look into Morka’s statement, the APC to call its spokesperson to order, and the government to foster a culture of constructive dialogue rather than threats and intimidation.
The implications of this escalating situation are far-reaching, and the international community is paying close attention.
