Obi Alleges Death Threats Following New Year’s Message, Accuses Regime Of Authoritarianism
Abuja, Nigeria – Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023, Peter Obi, has issued a stark warning, alleging that he and his family have received death threats in response to his New Year’s message.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Obi specifically named Mr. Felix Morka, accusing him of issuing a veiled threat after criticising Obi’s message.
The post, which quickly went viral, included a link to a YouTube video of the aforementioned New Year’s address, urging the public to watch it and decide whether the threats were justified.
Obi explicitly challenged his critics to identify any transgression, reaffirming his dedication to decorum while vowing to continue speaking out against what he sees as Nigeria’s descent into authoritarianism.
“I ask the question because my New Year’s message has now resulted in threats to my life, family, and those around me,” Obi wrote.
“While I have received a variety of messages, one Mr Felix Morka has gone so far as to accuse me of ‘crossing the line,’ warning that I will face the consequences.”
The specific nature of Mr. Morka’s alleged threat is unknown, but Obi’s post suggests it stems from a disagreement over the content of his New Year’s address.
The nature of that address, which Obi urged the public to see for themselves, is currently under intense scrutiny online.
According to initial reports, it focused on governance, economics, and human rights. Many observers see the message as a continuation of Obi’s strong criticism of the current administration.
Obi’s statement sparked a firestorm of debate and concern across the political spectrum. Supporters have rallied behind him, condemning the alleged threats and echoing his concerns about Nigeria’s dwindling freedoms of expression.
Some commentators, on the other hand, have questioned the specifics of the threats and advocated for a measured response while further details are clarified.
Mr. Morka’s silence has fuelled speculation. Attempts to contact him for comment have so far been unsuccessful.
This incident highlights growing concerns about the state of democracy and free speech in Nigeria.
Obi’s prominent position and outspoken nature make him an especially high-profile target, raising concerns about the possibility of further political repression.
Human rights organisations are closely monitoring the situation, with several issuing statements of concern and calling for an investigation into the alleged threats.
The police have yet to respond publicly to Obi’s allegations, but the incident has undoubtedly raised concerns about the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens’ rights, particularly those who hold opposing views.
The next few days will be critical in determining the outcome of this unfolding drama and its implications for Nigeria’s political discourse.
The nation waits with bated breath as the situation unfolds.
