Abuja, Nigeria – Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned All Progressives Congress (APC) spokesperson Felix Morka’s inflammatory statements against Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, describing them as a direct threat to Obi’s life and a worrying sign of authoritarianism in Nigeria.

Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, called Morka’s remarks on Arise TV a “disturbing emblem of the current administration’s unsettling strategy in addressing opposition figures.”

He expressed deep concern about what he sees as a pattern of intimidation, citing the prolonged detention of Mahdi Shehu, a prominent critic of the government, as additional evidence.

“This threat against Obi, combined with Mahdi Shehu’s prolonged detention, signals a worrisome shift towards an authoritarian governance model,” Atiku stated in a press release, as reported by Politics Nigeria.

He emphasised that silencing dissenting voices sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the foundations of a healthy democracy.

Atiku cited Morka’s statement, which reportedly included the phrase, “Peter Obi has crossed the line so many times and has it coming to him whatever he gets,” as particularly concerning.

He urged the APC to clarify Morka’s “ominous suggestion” and issue a formal apology to Obi and Nigerians for the “derogatory language” used.

The former Vice President emphasised the importance of an open exchange of ideas in a functioning democracy.

He criticised Morka for framing Obi’s calls for constructive engagement as “a lawless Wild West scenario,” calling it reckless and unacceptable.

Atiku also drew attention to Shehu’s continued detention, claiming that the Tinubu administration has “crossed the line” with its “continuous vilification of opposition figures.”

He urged the government to reconsider its approach to dissent and opposition, urging all Nigerians to advocate for an end to the suppression of critical voices.

Obi has claimed that Morka’s statement is a direct threat to his life and the safety of his family. Atiku’s condemnation adds weight to these concerns, raising new concerns about the state of political discourse and free speech in Nigeria.
