Ten-Man Liverpool Battle Back To Earn Point Against Fulham
Liverpool, England – Virgil van Dijk has lauded Liverpool’s battling spirit after they secured a dramatic 2-2 draw against Fulham at Anfield on Saturday, despite playing a man down for the majority of the game.
Andy Robertson’s first-half red card left the Reds facing an uphill battle, particularly after Andreas Pereira’s opener put the visitors ahead.
The dismissal, coming after Liverpool had already conceded, left the home side facing a challenging second half.
However, Cody Gakpo’s early second-half goal levelled the score, sparking hopes of a comeback. That hope was briefly dashed when substitute Rodrigo Muniz restored Fulham’s lead in the 76th minute.
But in a thrilling finale, substitute Diogo Jota, making his return from injury, popped up with a late equaliser four minutes from time, rescuing a point for Anort Slot’s side.
Van Dijk, speaking to Sky Sports after the match, emphasised the team’s resilience: “Obviously [it’s] a good comeback – that’s very positive,” he said.
“It’s disappointing to be down to 10 men, but the fight we showed… we kept going. We kept trying to find the free man to create chances.
“It could’ve been more, but eventually we take the point and move on.”
The Dutch defender highlighted the team’s composure after Robertson’s dismissal: “We stayed calm,” Van Dijk explained.
“It sounds easier than it is, but it was always going to be tough against them. They make it tough for a lot of teams, and we’ve seen that before.
“We had to play a very good game, unfortunately going 1-0 down and with a red card. We had to turn it around and keep fighting, and that’s what we tried in the second half.”
Despite the positive result, the match served as a reminder of the challenges facing Liverpool this season.
The late drama, however, showcased the character and determination within the squad, a testament to their ability to fight back from adversity even when significantly outnumbered.
