Lagos Government Enacts New Law To Check Human Organ Harvesting, Others
The Lagos State Government has implemented five new laws on human organ harvesting, improving consumer protection, regulating health practices, strengthening law enforcement, and enhancing fire and rescue services.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu signed the bills into law, calling them “a testament to our commitment to the well-being, security, and prosperity of all Lagos residents.”
The laws include the Lagos Consumer Protection Agency Law, the Human Organ Harvesting and Tissue Transplantation Law, the Lagos State Enforcement Training Institute Law, the Victims Assistance and Witness Protection Law, and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Law.
Lawal Pedro (SAN), Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, revealed this during a press briefing on Thursday at the Ministry of Justice in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.
Pedro emphasised the legislation’s importance, saying, “These laws are not just milestones in Lagos State’s legislative journey; they demonstrate our unwavering commitment to ensuring that Lagos remains a beacon of progress, justice, and opportunity in Nigeria.
“As a government, we have always prioritised meeting our citizens’ immediate needs, protecting their rights, and ensuring their safety, health, and prosperity.
“In this regard, recently signed laws address critical issues such as public welfare, human rights, safety, and environmental sustainability.
“These laws were thoughtfully designed to address some of our state’s most pressing issues while paving the way for a more just, secure, and prosperous future for all Lagos residents.”
He stated that the Lagos Consumer Protection Agency Law is the most important, as it represents a significant step forward in improving consumer rights in the state.
According to him, as Lagos continues to be a centre of commerce, business, and trade, our residents’ interests must be protected.
Pedro cited the Lagos Consumer Protection Agency Law as a significant step forward in protecting residents.
The law establishes the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, which is in charge of investigating unfair trade practices, consumer fraud, and substandard products.
He also stated that the Human Organ Harvesting and Tissue Transplantation Law would address the illegal organ trade and unethical medical practices.
Pedro called it a “groundbreaking framework to regulate organ harvesting and transplantation in Lagos State.”
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Law restructures the state’s fire services to increase their capacity.
Pedro emphasised its significance, saying, “This law transforms our fire service into a world-class safety and rescue organization capable of handling emergencies effectively.
