Lagos Government Explains Why Julius Berger Is The Preferred Contractor
Prof. Akin Abayomi, Lagos State Commissioner for Health has explained why Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, a leading engineering construction firm, is the preferred contractor for relevant jobs in the state.
Speaking at the recent kick-off of the rehabilitation of the 10-story Lagos General Hospital, the commissioner stated that the company has long been tried and tested and found to be capable of handling the rehabilitation work and that this project is critical to the Lagos state government, particularly in light of the recent tragic fatal incident at the facility.
However, after considering several companies, Julius Berger was chosen as the preferred contractor due to their experience with allied projects in Nigeria’s construction industry.
Prof Akin Abayomi then asked Julius Berger to create a suitable work plan for the project, keeping in mind that the safety of the resident doctors is critical because the hospital is a busy place with many patients and doctors coming and going.
The Commissioner also advised the Resident Doctors to follow the safety rules provided to ensure that the facility runs smoothly once work begins.
He warned that a construction site is a dangerous place and that all Resident Doctors should follow the rules and cooperate with the workers there.
Engineer Adegbenga Osunlana, speaking for JBN, stated that numerous measures will be implemented to ensure the safety of the facility’s residents and that a crack Julius Berger HSE team has been dispatched to the site. For work to begin immediately, the residents Doctors on the 7th and 10th floors of the building were asked to leave.
Engr Osunlana assured the commissioner that numerous precautions had been taken to ensure everyone’s safety at the facility.
He added that these include means of transportation within the facility, equipment and storage areas, protection against dust and noise pollution from heavy machinery, unauthorised entry, and electrical hazards.
He went on to say that Julius Berger prioritises the well-being of the facility’s residents, which is why they are known as Africa’s largest engineering construction company.
Mr. Bolaji Johnson, one of the Project Coordinators, reiterated that Julius Berger would like to appeal to the resident doctors that the contractor has mapped out some areas that will be cordoned off as work progresses and that such places will not be cordoned off forever.
He stressed that as a result, it is likely to cause discomfort and inconvenience, but that it is paramount for the resident doctors to be safety conscious and strictly
Dr Akinsanmi, the Doctors’ Representative, responded that the resident doctors had followed the notifexcepteption of a few who had yet to leave for various reasons. He promised the contractors that everything would be completed so Julius Berger could begin work in earnest.
During a tour of the facility, the Lagos State Commissioner of Health stated that a forensic analysis of the collapsed lift had been completed and submitted to the Ministry of Justice and that the investigation was still ongoing, so he urged those who would be working on-site to avoid the area.
