LAGOS, NIGERIA – Chief Joe Igbokwe’s recent assertion that Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, is too young to run for Governor of Lagos State has ignited a firestorm of criticism.

Leading the charge is Anambra-based lawyer, Prince Uche Darlington Okeke, who vehemently denounced Igbokwe’s comments as discriminatory and reflective of a “Stone Age” mindset.

Okeke, a British-trained lawyer and former aide to the Anambra State Governor, lambasted Igbokwe’s statement that Lagos “is not for boys,” arguing it is not only misleading but actively detrimental to societal progress by undermining the potential of young leaders.

“History is replete with examples of young leaders who have achieved greatness,” Okeke stated, citing figures like Alexander the Great, Napoleon Bonaparte, Bill Clinton, Emmanuel Macron, and Rishi Sunak as examples of impactful young leaders globally.

He further highlighted Nigerian examples including General Yakubu Gowon, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Goodluck Jonathan, Peter Obi, Orji Uzor Kalu, and Donald Duke, all of whom assumed significant leadership roles at relatively young ages.

Okeke pointed out the inherent irony of Igbokwe, who has never held a significant elective office, dictating who should lead Lagos State.

He characterized Igbokwe’s statement as a manifestation of the “pull-him-down” syndrome that has hampered Nigeria’s advancement.

“Instead of focusing on age,” Okeke emphasised, “we should assess candidates based on qualifications, experience, and vision.

Seyi Tinubu, with his impressive track record and innovative ideas, including his legal training in the UK and Nigeria, has demonstrated his capacity to lead Lagos State forward.”

Okeke strongly defended Seyi Tinubu’s right to aspire to any political office, asserting that his father’s presidency is irrelevant to his eligibility and should not be a barrier to his ambitions.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to reject discriminatory comments and focus on building a brighter future.
