Abia Indigenes In Anambra Urge Governor Otti To Lead Campaign For Kanu’s Release
By Chuks Eke
Onitsha, Anambra State – Abia State indigenes residing in Anambra State have issued a fervent appeal to their Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, to spearhead a campaign for the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The group believes Kanu’s release is crucial to alleviating the escalating insecurity in the South East region.
The call was made during the group’s end-of-year party at Divine Hotel, Fegge, Onitsha, where Comrade Damian Ogudike, President of Abia State indigenes in Anambra, and Bishop (Dr.) Innocent Chidi, President of the Abia Ministers’ Forum in Anambra State, addressed the press.
Bishop Chidi emphasised the importance of Governor Otti taking the lead, stating that as Kanu’s governor, he is uniquely positioned to advocate for his release.
He urged Governor Otti to collaborate with other South East governors to pressure the federal government.
The Bishop also praised Governor Otti’s significant infrastructural achievements since assuming office and called for prompt payment of salaries, pensions, and gratuities, along with improvements in education.
Chief Obiagwu Omenuko, a businessman present, countered claims linking Kanu directly to the South East’s insecurity, arguing that the blame lies with governors and politicians who utilise hired thugs to instigate unrest.
Comrade Ogudike acknowledged Governor Otti’s efforts to combat insecurity in Abia State, but highlighted the overall collapse of Nigeria’s security apparatus, particularly intelligence gathering.
He commended the Governor’s decisive action in dismantling a suspected terrorist network operating from a market in Abia State, showcasing his courage and determination.
Ogudike pledged unwavering support for Governor Otti, warning against any opposition.
He further urged the Governor to implement worker-friendly policies and expedite the construction of the Abia Governor’s Lodge, criticising the practice of past governors residing in rented accommodations.
He stressed that Abia State cannot continue to be governed from private residences.
The group’s statement also highlighted their long-standing struggle (since 2019) for good governance in Abia State, crediting their efforts for Governor Otti’s election victory.
They emphasised the urgency of Kanu’s release before the Christmas and New Year holidays to prevent further insecurity and encourage the return of Abians in the diaspora.
