EU, GIZ Bring Light To Etomi Community In Cross River State
Etomi, Cross River State, Nigeria – After six long years of living in darkness, residents of Etomi community in Cross River State are finally enjoying the benefits of reliable and affordable electricity thanks to a new solar mini-grid project.
The project, funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the German development agency GIZ, provides 119.5kW of clean energy to over 600 households and businesses in the community.
“This project is a testament to the EU’s commitment to providing clean and affordable energy to Nigerians,” said Inga Stefanowicz, Head of the Green and Digital Economy Section, EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS.
The project falls under the EU’s Global Gateway initiative, aiming to bridge the energy gap in developing nations.
The solar mini-grid is managed through a public-private partnership, ensuring long-term sustainability and maintenance.
A private company operates the grid in collaboration with the Cross River State Government.
Eka Williams, Cross River State Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, expressed gratitude for the project, emphasising its significance for the community: “This off-grid system will serve Etomi community well, and we are currently replicating this model in four other communities within Etung Local Government Area.”
The arrival of electricity has brought immense joy to Etomi residents. John Okpa, a resident, remarked: “We are ecstatic to have electricity back after six years of darkness. We are grateful to the EU for this gift and hope they continue to bless our community.”
The project has already brought positive changes to local businesses. Precious Jeremiah, a hairdresser in the community, shared her experience: “For seven years, I relied on a generator to power my business, which was costly and inconvenient.
Now, thanks to the solar plant, I can provide my services in a clean and comfortable environment, saving money and improving my earnings.”
The successful implementation of the solar mini-grid project in Etomi serves as a shining example of how international collaboration and sustainable energy solutions can improve the lives of communities in need.
As the project continues to be replicated in other communities, the positive impact of clean, affordable electricity will continue to ripple across Cross River State.
