IMPI Accuses Guardian Of Coup-Baiting In ‘Misery’ Article
LAGOS, NIGERIA – The Independent Media and Policy Initiative (IMPI) has condemned a recent article published by The Guardian newspaper, accusing it of being misleading and promoting a narrative that could lead to military intervention.
The article, titled “Calls for military intervention: Misery, harsh policies driving Nigerians to desperate choices,” published on October 25th, was deemed by IMPI to be a reflection of the author’s personal bias rather than a factual analysis.
The policy think tank, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju, pointed out that the author, Eno-Abasi Sunday, has a history of anti-APC sentiments on his social media platforms.
IMPI criticised the article’s lack of depth and research, questioning the author’s claim of “plunging misery index” without providing any evidence.
The statement highlighted the author’s focus on “unmet expectations” and “failed promises” as justification for calls for military intervention, despite the Tinubu administration being only 18 months in office.
“From an analyst perspective, there is no way a reversal of the twin policies of fuel subsidy and multiple foreign exchange rates of the previous administration would not have created some shock in the system,” the statement argued.
IMPI emphasised the economic benefits of these policy changes, citing increased revenue for all tiers of government.
Furthermore, IMPI pointed to a previous Guardian article published in August 2022, titled “Reflections on fuel subsidy regime,” which positively portrayed the removal of fuel subsidy.
They questioned why The Guardian would publish a “big story” with a skewed narrative in contrast to the previous feature.
IMPI urged the media to be more circumspect in their reporting and avoid narratives that could contribute to instability in the country.
They stressed the importance of balanced and factual reporting, especially when dealing with sensitive issues.
This statement from IMPI adds fuel to the ongoing debate surrounding the role of the media in a politically charged environment. The Guardian has not yet responded to these accusations.
