Abuja, Nigeria –  Former Heads of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar and General Ibrahim Babangida, along with other dignitaries, have reaffirmed the Nigerian military’s critical role in preserving national unity and democratic stability.

Their comments came at the public presentation of Nine Lives: The Bello-Fadile Memoirs,a book detailing the controversial 1995 alleged coup attempt against the late General Sani Abacha.

The event, held Monday in Abuja, saw a chorus of praise for Col. Bello Fadile (rtd), the book’s author, for his patriotism and unwavering commitment to democratic ideals.

General Abdulsalami lauded Fadile’s service as an example for Nigerian youth, urging them to embrace a spirit of national service and dedication.

“Youths have a critical role in nation-building,” Abdulsalami stressed, emphasizing the importance of patriotism and selflessness.

He acknowledged the sacrifices made by soldiers to maintain peace and urged young Nigerians to emulate Fadile’s commitment to the nation’s progress.

He further highlighted the military’s vital role as “a guardian of national unity” amidst internal and external threats.

General Babangida, in a message delivered by his daughter, commended Fadile’s bravery and resilience in the face of adversity, particularly during his ordeal surrounding the alleged coup.

Professor Agbo Madaki, in his book review, revealed that “Nine Lives” offers a counter-narrative to the media’s portrayal of the 1995 events as a “phantom coup,” presenting a detailed account from Fadile’s perspective.

Madaki praised the book’s engaging narrative and urged the military to reform, focusing on safeguarding human rights, upholding the rule of law, and combating corruption, rather than power grabs.

The book launch attracted a host of dignitaries, including former Senate President David Mark, Senator Ndoma Egba, former Minister of Justice Kano Agabi, former Chief of Defence Staff General Luther Agwai, and former National Security Adviser Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd).

Their presence underscored the significance of the event and the ongoing debate surrounding Nigeria’s military history and its role in the nation’s future.
