The Nigerian Red Cross Society has issued an urgent call to action to combat the country’s growing hunger crisis.
Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, addressed the gathering and emphasised the gravity of the situation, highlighting the dire reality of 32 million Nigerians facing hunger and malnutrition.
“These are not just statistics,” he emphasised. “They are real people – our people – going through unimaginable hardship.”
Adeaga urged Nigerians to work together to “rewrite the story of hunger” in their country, emphasising that “we have the power to change lives.”
Bhupinder Tomar, Head of Delegation for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, echoed this sentiment and emphasised the importance of taking immediate action.
He cited climate-related droughts and floods as exacerbating factors in the food insecurity crisis, emphasising that “this is a call to action.”
It is a challenge that requires a team effort to ensure that no Nigerian goes hungry.
Mrs. Bola Kolawole, Chairperson of the Nigerian Red Cross Lagos Branch, emphasised the importance of Lagos as a financial hub and praised Nigerians’ determination to build a better future in the face of pressing challenges.
Mrs. Absa Faty Kane, International Ambassador of the Swiss Red Cross and Founding Member of Tiffany Circle West Africa, emphasised the devastating effects of poverty and hopelessness.
She discussed the dangers that young people face when forced to embark on perilous journeys in search of a better life due to economic hardship.
“We must combine our efforts effectively and urgently to provide relief to communities affected by disasters and insecurity,” she concluded.
The gala event provided a powerful platform for the Nigerian Red Cross to demonstrate its commitment to meeting the immediate and long-term needs of hunger-affected communities.
The organisation hopes to make a long-term difference in Nigeria’s humanitarian landscape thanks to the generosity of donors, volunteers, and partners.
