Wike Berates Contractor Over Delays On Road Project, Vows Accountability
Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, has issued a stern warning to the contractors responsible for the delayed construction of the left-hand service carriageway from Ring Road 1 (RRI) to Wasa Junction (15 KM), expressing deep dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work despite receiving more than 80% of the contract payment.
Speaking during a site inspection in Abuja on Friday, Wike chastised the contractor, China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC), for failing to meet project deadlines.
“Very bad, I am not encouraged,” Wike said, clearly frustrated. “My attention was drawn yesterday when I went to inspect the Apo-Karshi road that led us through Wassa. I passed through this area and tried to find out where CGC works, which is one of the most respected companies in my opinion. But I am not happy about this road.”
Wike stated that, despite promises of progress, the contractor had only completed 50% of the work. “We paid more than 80% of this contract, and as far as I am concerned, they have not completed the work.”
In response to the delays, Wike called an emergency meeting with the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and the CGC, ordering the contractor to commit to completing the project by May 2025.
“Let them go, commit themselves, and tell us by May that they will complete this project. That is the only way I am going to accept it,” Wike stated.
The Apo-Karshi road project is a critical infrastructure development aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in Abuja and stimulating economic activity in the area.
Wike emphasised the importance of timely completion, stating that once completed, the road would significantly reduce traffic bottlenecks and improve business operations.
Wike also sent a clear message to underperforming contractors, stating that non-performance would result in severe consequences. “We have no affiliation with non-performing contractors. If you do not perform, we will kick you out. We do not care if you are an indigenous or foreign contractor.
The FCT Minister underscored that contractors who fail to deliver on their promises would not only be terminated but also be required to pay back any funds received. “You can’t just collect our money and think we will let you go. No. When we kick you out, we make you pay for it.”
As Wike continues his push for accountability and transparency in the administration of the FCT’s projects, Abuja residents and commuters hope that his firm stance will bring about the timely completion of crucial infrastructure developments, starting with the Apo-Karshi road.
