Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, has slammed the recent Edo State elections as a clear case of “state capture,” describing the process as a subversion of the democratic system.

Obi, in a series of tweets cited by THE NEWSHAUS on Monday, denounced the election results, which saw Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) declared the winner.

He emphasised the lack of a genuine democratic process and the negative impact of poor leadership recruitment on the nation.

“What happened over the weekend in Edo State is not a democratic process,” Obi said.

“Instead, it was a clear example of’state capture’ and the ongoing undermining of our democratic process and values.”

He also emphasised the serious consequences of such flawed leadership recruitment, urging those in power to address the problem rather than exploit it for political gain.

Obi also highlighted the significant investments made in the INEC’s IReV and BVAS systems, emphasising the importance of their proper use in combating electoral fraud.

He issued a stern warning to those undermining democracy, reminding them that “the society you are helping to destroy today will eventually exact her revenge on you tomorrow.”

Obi’s strong stance on the Edo State elections demonstrates his ongoing commitment to electoral reform and the need for a genuine democratic process.

He continues to advocate for a political system that prioritises serving the nation over seizing power.
