Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck Split Signs Leading Up To Divorce

Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from Ben Affleck on Tuesday, but if you paid attention, there had been signs of this breakup for months.

Lopez filed for divorce in Los Angeles County Superior Court on August 20, two years after her and Affleck’s second wedding ceremony in Georgia in summer 2022, according to court records obtained by Newsweek.

The actor and singer married for the first time in July 2022, in Las Vegas. They had previously dated for a few years in the early 2000s but ended their first engagement in 2004.

For months, rumours circulated that the couple, dubbed “Bennifer,” were planning to split. Newsweek provides a detailed account of the signs that led to this moment.

On Wednesday, Newsweek contacted Lopez and Affleck’s spokespeople for comment outside of regular business hours.

Fans previously noted that the couple had been spending a lot of time apart and attending events separately. One of the most shocking moments was when Lopez was seen alone at the Met Gala on May 6.

People were surprised that Affleck did not attend because Lopez was co-chairing the glamorous fundraising gala, and many expected him to support his wife during the event.

Affleck was not able to attend the Met Gala due to filming The Accountant 2 in Los Angeles, according to his representative.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Affleck had moved out of the house he shared with Lopez, and the singer was seen looking at other homes.

According to TMZ, Lopez was spotted at a Beverly Hills property without the actor from Gone Girl on May 14. Two days later, on May 16, the actor was seen leaving his Brentwood, California, home, rather than the one he shared with Lopez.

In July, the couple listed their 12-bedroom, 38,000-square-foot estate in Beverly Hills, California, for sale. CNN reported that the home was listed for sale at $68 million. In 2023, Lopez and Affleck paid slightly more than $60.8 million for the estate.

Lopez cancelled her summer tour, This Is Me…Live, the same month, citing a desire to spend more time with her children, family, and friends.

“Please know that I would not do this unless I believed it was absolutely necessary,” Lopez said in a statement. “I promise to make it up to you, and we will all be together again. I have a lot of love for everyone. “Until next time.”

In May, Lopez “liked” a cryptic Instagram post about relationships, fuelling speculation of a split with Affleck.

In a March upload, relationship coach Lenna Marsak (@yourcourageouscomeback) shared five slides depicting characteristics of a partner who is unable to form healthy relationships.

It also explained why each of these characteristics is not conducive to a healthy romantic relationship.

The caption says, “You can not have a relationship with someone who is disconnected from themselves. We can not expect others to see us if we can not even see ourselves. Getting into a relationship is easy. Nurturing and fostering is a different story. “Love is an action, not a feeling ❤️.”

As the month progressed, the couple was seen separately on several occasions. Lopez attended the L.A. premiere and Mexico City fan event for her Netflix film Atlas without her husband.

An interviewer at an event in Mexico City questioned Lopez about the breakup rumours, as seen in a clip shared online by El Gordo y la Flaca.

The “Let us Get Loud” singer laughed off the question and replied, “You know better than that.

Lopez celebrated her 55th birthday on July 24 with a lavish Bridgerton-themed party in the Hamptons. Affleck was not present at the event and was instead photographed in Los Angeles.

Lopez did not give Affleck a social media shoutout on his 52nd birthday, which was on August 15. Page Six obtained photos showing her visiting Affleck’s rental home in Brentwood.

Lopez and Affleck famously reunited in 2021, years after calling off their original engagement.

While the “Waiting for Tonight” singer married Marc Anthony in 2004 (with whom she has teenage twins) and the Oscar winner married Jennifer Garner (with whom he has three children), they reconciled years after their divorces and shortly after Lopez called off her engagement to baseball star Alex Rodriguez.
