Obi, Osinbajo Attend 2024 Democratic National Convention In US
Peter Obi, a presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, and Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria’s former Vice President, are among other Nigerian political heavyweights attending the 2024 Democratic National Convention in the United States.
They are attending the event as distinguished guests of the National Democratic Institute (NDI), a prestigious organisation dedicated to promoting democratic values around the world.
Among the notable attendees are Mr Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last election, and Mr Ken Nnamani, the former Senate President.
The US-based organisation was also said to have invited the Federal House of Representatives Speaker, Honourable Tajudeen Abbas, but it is unclear whether he accepted the invitation.
Meanwhile, in photos that have gone viral online, Obi and the former Vice President were seen sitting together in a hall, having a conversation.
On Wednesday, August 21, 2024, the former Governor of Anambra State took to his official X handle to express his gratitude and honour at being invited to the event by NDI.
He stated that he was invited “along with two other eminent Nigerians, and approximately two hundred other distinguished political leaders from over 91 countries, including former Heads of Government.”
“We were invited to participate in the 2024 International Leaders Forum (ILF) on the sidelines of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois, from August 19 to 22, 2024.
Obi wrote, “I am honoured and grateful to Senator Thomas Daschle and the Board of NDI for the gracious invitation.”
However, the Democratic National Convention is a watershed moment in the American political landscape, where the Democratic Party unpacks key policies, charts strategic directions, and formally nominates its presidential candidate.
This year, all eyes are on current US Vice President Kamala Harris, who is vying for an official nomination.
Furthermore, the convention provides a unique opportunity for global leaders and stakeholders to observe and participate in critical discussions that could influence international political currents.
Osinbajo and Obi’s invitation to such an august occasion highlighted their global engagement and international political profiles, as well as Nigeria’s active role in the global democratic community.
