Gov Douye Diri Pre-Season Football Tournament Begins Monday

The Governor Douye Diri Pre-season Football Tournament begins today, August 12, 2024, at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa. Following the draws yesterday, eight teams will compete in two groups.
Bayelsa United, Sunshine Stars, Akwa United, and Abia Warriors are in Group A, while Krusaders Selected FC, Bendel Insurance, Rivers United, and Kwara United compete in Group B. The tournament begins at 8:30 a.m., with Krusaders taking on Bendel Insurance, followed by Rivers United taking on Kwara United. Bayelsa United will face Sunshine Stars in the afternoon, followed by Akwa United and Abia Warriors.
The tournament runs from August 12 to 18, with rest days on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The organisers have announced cash prizes: ₦1.5 million for the winner, ₦1 million for the runner-up, and ₦500,000 for third place. All teams will also receive a ₦500,000 appearance fee.
Mr Ono Akpe, Director General of the Prosperity Cup, emphasised the tournament’s ability to foster team bonding and player scouting ahead of the NPFL season. Team representatives, including Abia Warriors’ Coordinator, Mr John Kalu, and Akwa United’s Media Officer, Mfon Patrick, have given positive feedback on the tournament’s organisation and coordination.
As excitement grows in Yenagoa, the tournament promises to be a major event on the local football calendar, showcasing talent and encouraging competition among the participating teams.
