Dr Samuel Ogbuku, Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), has emphasised the importance of an effective and professional workforce, well-equipped with skills and motivated by sustainable wages, to drive the Commission’s efforts to deliver on its mandate.
According to Seledi Thompson-Wakama, Director of Corporate Affairs, Ogboku made the statement during a two-day workshop on Wage Administration, Policy Implementation, and Revenue Generation in Public Agencies held in Port Harcourt for Niger Delta Development Commission executive management, directors, salary-related desk officers, and union executives.

The NDDC boss, who stated that effective work behaviour could only be achieved through staff motivation, which is a critical component of governance, maintained that since the formation of the current NDDC board, the Commission has not wavered in giving priority to its staff in accordance with its mantra of transitioning from transaction to transformation.

In order to ensure a good service and a conducive working environment, which would serve as a catalyst for high level productivity, Ogbuku stated that the NDDC was collaborating with institutions with the necessary expertise in wage administration, policy implementation, and revenue generation.
He stated: “While we are committed to providing a very good remuneration package and working conditions for our employees, we are also aware of the needs of other stakeholders in the region.
As a result, it is necessary to strike a delicate balance in order to meet the needs of all stakeholders, including employees.”
In his welcome address, Alabo Boma Iyaye, NDDC Executive Director, Finance and Administration, stated that the workshop’s theme was timely and critical, “as the Commission confronts the challenges of attracting, retaining, and motivating top talent in today’s fast-paced business landscape.”
He said, “Wage administration is a make-or-break issue for organisations. It is a delicate balancing act between paying employees fairly and ensuring financial stability. But we cannot afford to get it wrong. Effective wage management is critical to increasing employee satisfaction, productivity, and, ultimately, organisational success.”
He challenged the staff to view the workshop as a valuable learning opportunity that required active participation.
So, I encourage you to participate actively, ask challenging questions, and share your knowledge.
In his presentation, Mr. Ekpo Nta, Chairman of the National Salaries, Wages, and Incomes Commission (NSIWC), who went down Memory Lane to trace the origins of NDDC, told staff that they must live up to expectations so that the agency does not fizzle out due to underperformance.
He challenged the participants not to let personal interests override the organization’s vision *but* to instead add value to themselves and the agency.
Nta went on to say that achieving an organization’s goals was dependent on the efficiency of its workforce.
