Residents in Benin City awoke Sunday morning to see widespread defacement and vandalism of billboards belonging to People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate Dr. Asue Ighodalo.

Billboards at the Asoro bus stop, the UNIBEN Ekenwan Campus, the Agboma junction on Ekenwan Road opposite Mat-Ice, and Akenzuwa after the stadium road junction were just a few of the many others seen firsthand by this reporter.

A member of the PDP’s Media Directorate in the Edo State Campaign Council, who requested anonymity, stated that the vandalism had been ongoing for months.

“They have been destroying Dr. Asue’s billboards since shortly after he won the PDP primaries in February, but he is a very calm man.
They are even destroying vehicles with PDP stickers in Upper Sakponba.
When we wanted to shout to the press, he said we should report to and notify the appropriate authorities.
“Even now, we have been told not to react to avoid heating up the political situation. Dr. Asue just wants to focus on issues, which is what we will continue to do.”

When asked who they believe was behind the vandalism, the source
responded, “We have our suspicions, but mentioning names will only
Increase tensions in the state. We have reported to the authorities.
Allow them to investigate and bring the culprits to justice.”

When reached by phone, Dr. Ighodalo declined to speak on the matter. “I am on the campaign trail, brother. Let us talk when I eturn to town. My sole focus is how to move the largest number of Edolites to prosperity. All of the other things are distractions.
Let me again appeal to everyone, both candidates and supporters, not to use politics to destroy our state and institutions.”
