Annual Mathematics Competition Held Across The Country
The Annual Nations Mathematics Competition (ANMC) took place across the country on Saturday.
The competition, organised by the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) in collaboration with the National Mathematical Centre, has over 10,000 students from primary 5 and 6 to JSS 1, 2, and 3, writing at 35 centres across 30 states in Nigeria.
The Annual National Mathematics Competition (ANMC) has been held annually for the past 21 years and has become a household name in Nigeria’s education system, particularly in the field of mathematics. It is the country’s largest and most prestigious mathematics competition, giving students a chance to demonstrate their mathematical abilities.
The competition has also drawn people from various schools, cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions who have a strong grasp of mathematics.
Mr. Erdal Yilmaz, the ANMC Coordinator, states that the primary goal of ANMC is to assess students’ problem-solving and mathematical reasoning abilities. It allows young mathematicians from all over the country to compete in a series of difficult mathematical problems, boosting their confidence and enthusiasm for mathematics. He also mentioned that the competition offers scholarship awards.
Speaking to journalists on behalf of the Coordinator at the Competition’s Abuja Centre (Nigerian Tulip International School, Wuse), the Assistant Coordinator, Shahbaz Malik, stated: “Mathematics is a critical subject that plays a vital role in our daily lives, and our focus is to keep a genuine love for mathematics growing in the hearts of the young ones, from primary school to secondary level. We believe it will become easier for them to navigate the corridors of science at the tertiary levels.
He explained that the ANMC consists of two rounds of problem-solving. Qualifiers from both geopolitical zones will advance to the second round of the competition. The top-performing students will be awarded cash prizes, scholarships, and other incentives in the second round. Teachers and schools from the second-round qualifiers will also receive prizes.
He also stated that the winners will have access to full tuition scholarship opportunities at Nigerian Tulip International Colleges.
Mr. Fevzullah Bilgin, Managing Director of NTIC, who also spoke about the competition, stated: “Aside from winning prizes at ANMC, we hope that the competition will instill in the young people a desire for various inspiration and innovation in the fields of mathematics and other sciences.
“We look forward to seeing them succeed in their chosen fields and careers.”
Omotayo Rubangs, the mother of one of the participants, praised the organisers and stated that the competition has sparked an interest in mathematics in many Nigerian children, noting that his son has had to consistently prepare for the competition.
Some of the participants who spoke with journalists expressed optimism that they would win the competition and pursue careers in mathematics.
