Six Nigerian Drug Mules Rushed To Hospital After They’re Busted At Brazilian Airport Before Boarding Flight To Ethiopia
On Tuesday, six Nigerian passengers were apprehended with cocaine capsules in their bellies as they sought to board a flight in Brazil.
Officers from the Federal Police were conducting routine checks on passengers awaiting a flight to Ethiopia at Guarulhos International Airport in the south-eastern city of So Paulo when they saw one of the suspects acting strangely.
The guy and his hand luggage were investigated by authorities before he was subjected to a drug and explosive trace detection gadget test, which proved that he had been in contact with cocaine.
The person admits to ingesting the little plastic bags containing the Type-A party drug.
His six accomplices, all men, were subjected to the same test, which confirmed that they had come into touch with the powdery drug.
The drug mules were all transferred to a nearby medical institution, where x-rays revealed dozens of capsules in their stomachs, and operations to expel the cocaine were performed.
Some of the accused had 100 to 150 capsules hidden in their abdomens.
Three of the suspects had connecting flights to the northern Nigerian city of Kano after arriving in Ethiopia.
They are scheduled to appear before a federal court judge on charges of international narcotics trafficking.
According to authorities, the six Nigerian males were on the National Migrant Registry.
Three of the accused had previously entered Brazil seeking refuge, and one was caught on an arrest warrant at Guarulhos International Airport in 2017.
Since 2019, authorities at Guarulhos International Airport have apprehended 43 persons carrying cocaine in capsules, according to data published by the Brazilian news outlet Globo News.
During the checks, at least 15,464 kilos of cocaine were seized.
Despite the number of arrests, the airport’s Federal Police chief, Dennis Cali, admitted that it is difficult to pick up travellers who may be carrying drugs in their bellies due to a lack of X-ray devices.
‘We don’t have a body scan system at the airport,’ Cali explained. ‘So it’s a pretty deep examination of the passenger’s profile, ticket buying record,’ says the analyst. Many analyses must be performed before we (find) the suspicious person.’
Cali stated that the suspects were promptly brought to the hospital due to concerns that one of the little balloons could have broken and exposed any of them to a fatal overdose.
A Colombian guy, 21, died in a hospital in Santo Domingo de la Cazada, Spain, in April after two of the 93 cocaine capsules he consumed exploded in his stomach. The packages contained 1,200 grammes of cocaine, according to an autopsy.
