Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested seven individuals accused of vandalizing critical national infrastructure in Abuja.

The arrests, announced during a parade by FCT Commandant Dr. Olusola Odumosu, are part of a broader crackdown on recent attacks targeting national assets in the capital.

Five suspects – Nafiu Ibrahim (19), Shefiu Sadiq (21), Yahaya Musbau (24), Mohanzam Muktar (20), and Yunusa Ma’aruf (19) – were apprehended along Constitution Avenue after an NSCDC ambush.

The group is alleged to have been removing manhole covers and armoured cables during the night. Recovered items included the stolen manhole covers, cables, two digging tools, and two vehicles – a Toyota Carina and a Toyota Corolla – believed to have been used to transport the stolen goods.

Separately, Haruna Yahaya (20) and Haliru Sanusi (22) were arrested for allegedly stealing concrete reinforcement iron rods from a drainage system near the Presidential Villa.

Commandant Odumosu condemned the acts as “inhuman and wicked,” vowing to continue the fight against vandalism with adjusted tactics if necessary.

He emphasized the need for stricter regulations on scrap metal markets in the FCT, arguing that limiting access to buyers would deter vandals.

He also called for stiffer penalties for those convicted of such crimes and urged residents to cooperate with the NSCDC by providing timely intelligence.
