Zulum Urges Swift Action On Collapsed Alau Dam, Threatens Presidential Intervention
Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum has warned the federal government, demanding the immediate reconstruction of the collapsed Alau Dam before the next rainy season.
Large parts of Maiduguri and the surrounding local government areas of Konduga and Jere were submerged following the dam’s failure.
The Alau Dam, built between 1984 and 1986 to serve Maiduguri’s irrigation and domestic water needs, collapsed recently, causing widespread flooding.
Following an assessment committee report, Governor Zulum expressed grave concern over the looming threat of further flooding as the rainy season approaches in March.
“We have limited time!” Governor Zulum stated on Monday. “By next week, we’ll be in January, and rainfall will start in parts of Borno State by March. The Federal Ministry of Water Resources needs to urgently begin reconstruction.”
Zulum highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that consultations have already taken place between the state’s assessment committee and a federal government team.
He emphasised the state government’s commitment to resolving the issue, stating: “On our part, we shall push this matter to the letter.
“If there’s no action on the ground in a few days, I will go and see Mr. President and beg him to allow the Northeast Development Commission to take over and start the reconstruction immediately.”
He expressed fears that bureaucratic delays could prove disastrous, stating that waiting for official processes could leave them with insufficient time to complete necessary repairs before the rains.
However, he remains optimistic, asserting, “If we can start on time, with serious commitment we can rebuild the substantial part of the collapsed dyke.”
While acknowledging the temporary measures taken by the state government to mitigate further water spillage,
Governor Zulum stressed the need for a long-term solution. Despite the significant financial strain caused by the flooding, he assured the public that the state government would collaborate with the federal government to prevent future disasters.
“As a responsible government, we will not fold our arms and wait for the federal government until another disaster occurs,” Zulum declared, acknowledging the considerable impact the flooding has had on the state’s finances.
The governor’s urgent call underscores the gravity of the situation and the potential for further devastation if swift action is not taken.
